it helps him. he might be so invested that he loses awareness of just how much he's fixating on this small act, steeling through the tension of eren's reception hanging in the balance. it's as important to understand what works in comforting him as it is to understand how to harm or subdue him. it was a part of caring for someone, and care had to be cultivated. he didn't have a choice in it, only in how he crafted its eventual manifestation. eren could hate him like suou did or become a friend.
